“Dear Church” Discussion
May we continue the conversation? You are invited to join me in the very uncomfortable but essential conversation of systemic racism in our country and, specifically, in our own denomination of the ELCA. We will use Pastor Lenny Duncan’s book, “Dear Church: A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the US,” as a starting point. I’ll be honest, this was a very hard book for me to read. Pastor Duncan’s honesty offended me, confronted me, and, thankfully, moved me along to a better understanding of how I can positively address the systemic racism that is a very real part of our denomination.
From the online description: Part manifesto, part confession, and all love letter, Dear Church offers a bold new vision for the future of Duncan’s denomination and the broader mainline Christian community of faith. Dear Church rejects the narrative of church decline and calls everyone–leaders and laity alike–to the front lines of the church’s renewal through racial equality and justice. It is time for the church to rise up, dust itself off, and take on forces of this world that act against God: whiteness, misogyny, nationalism, homophobia, and economic injustice. Duncan gives a blueprint for the way forward and urges us to follow in the revolutionary path of Jesus.

- Read it by July 27th.
- On July 28th at 6:30 p.m. we will gather to discuss the book. Depending on how many participants we have, we will either discuss the book in person or via Zoom.

Mount Olive’s 100th Anniversary
Mount Olive’s 100th Anniversary is May 8, 2021! We have had two informal Zoom brainstorming sessions to present ideas for celebrating our 100th anniversary. As you can imagine, we have a laundry list of options. One thought is that given our anniversary is on Saturday, May 8th, having a celebration on Sunday, May 9th (Mother’s Day), might not be the best plan moving forward. An idea that is gaining traction is to combine our celebration with Rally Day on September 12th as a kick-off for our 2nd Century. This would allow us to have a series of small events throughout the summer and build on “A Summer of Renewal” and giving “God the Glory.” We welcome all thoughts and ideas and invite everyone’s participation. As we progress, we will be reaching out to members for their active involvement. Follow-up meetings will be held in the near future.
